About Cornell
Cornell was planned as a traditional neighbourhood: narrow lots, front porches facing the street, garages tucked behind on rear lanes, and parks within a short walk. It was designed by Duany Plater-Zyberk, the firm known for New Urbanist communities, and the first homes went up in the late 1990s.
The area was first settled by the Reesor family. Today Cornell is one of Markham's larger communities and is still growing, with Cornell Centre planned as its future core of shops, offices and higher-density homes.
Homes in Cornell
Most of Cornell is low-rise. You will find freehold townhouses, semi-detached homes and detached homes on compact lots, most with garages off a rear lane. Some homes include a coach house or apartment above the garage. Condo townhouses and stacked towns sit closer to the main roads, and more condos are planned around Cornell Centre.
Mattamy Homes was one of the early builders, and many streets share the same porch-front, rear-lane design.
